Welcome to H.I.S. (Home Instructed Students)
H.I.S. is a Christian based home-school support group. Weekly socializations and various activities provide support for our local home-schoolers. Our group is open to home-schoolers looking for social activity time within the foundation of Christianity. Our children meet once a week at the Weslyan Church on Route 501 in Pine Grove Pennsylvania.
URGENT-
Hello Ladies,
As you may know our homeschool group is listed on the CHAP website. Some of you may have found this group by using it. Well, right now CHAP is contacting all of the group leaders on that site to mobilize and get a Bill passed. They need the help of all of us! You can help by making 2 phone calls.
Let me explain-
House Bill 1273 which has made it as far as the Education Committee may die if not passed by November of this year. Bill 1273 would eliminate the need to hand in a portfolio to the school district. That means that only the evaluator we choose looks over our childrens work. Homeschool families would only hand in the evaluators statements to the school district. This bill also eliminates the threat that could come from a superintendent or principal's assumption that appropriate education is not taking place. Right now they can say they have a "feeling" that an education is not taking place and request paperwork within 10 days to prove otherwise.
Home School Legal Defense also supports this bill as well as CHAP. I am pasting below the description of the bill from their website:
House Bill 1273: An Act Amending the Home Education Statute
Authors:
Representatives Marsico, Boyd, Caltagirone, Clymer, Cox, Denlinger, Fabrizio, Gingrich, Goodman, Kauffman, Kortz, Metcalfe, Pickett, Reichley, Solobay, True, Steil, Rock, M. Keller and Moul.
Summary:
This bill would make the following changes to the home education statute:
- Eliminate the public school superintendent’s review of portfolios;
- Require superintendents to accept an evaluator’s determination that an appropriate education is occurring in the home education program;
- Provide for an administrative procedure to resolve any claim by the superintendent that the parent has failed to comply with any aspect of the homeschool law; and
- Ensure that the home education program may continue during the time of any appeal of an adverse ruling by a hearing examiner.
The 2 people who are on the Education Commitee that we need to contact are:
EDUCATION CHAIRMAN- James Roebuck- office number-215-724-2227 and his Harrisburg office number is 717-783-1000
Minority Education Chairman-Jeff Stehr-home office number-724-837-5678 and his Harrisburg office number is 717-783-9311
I personally have made many phone calls to representatives over the years and a gentle voice of reason is the one that they hear the most. Just let them know that you support House Bill 1273 and that you are ahomeschooling parent and feel that it is unfair that you have to go through the same process twice. Having an evaluator who is accepted by the state of Pennsylvania agreeing that you have provided an appropriate education should be enough. To then have an untrained Superintendent or building Principal look over the same material puts an unecessary burden on you. Let the Lord guide you in your 2 phone calls. I am sure if we work together this Bill will get passed.
Please make those 2 phone calls!
